Across this country, housing insecurity continues to grow as a pressing issue with housing expenses on the rise across the country. Many La Porte County residents know firsthand the devastating impact that housing insecurity has on the health and well-being of individuals and families across our community. As Homeward Bound Villages works to develop affordable housing solutions, we feel compelled to shed light on this critical issue and the far-reaching consequences it has on both individual and public health.

The U.S. Department of Health defines housing insecurity as,

“Housing instability encompasses a number of challenges, such as having trouble paying rent, overcrowding, moving frequently, or spending the bulk of household income on housing. These experiences may negatively affect physical health and make it harder to access health care.”

When individuals and families lack access to stable, safe, and affordable housing, they face a myriad of health challenges that can have long-lasting effects.

Now that we’ve defined what housing insecurity is, we want to look at this topic on an individual level; housing insecurity can lead to a range of physical and mental health problems. Those experiencing homelessness or living in poor housing conditions are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease.

Moreover, the stress and trauma associated with housing insecurity can take a severe toll on mental health. Individuals may experience depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can hinder their ability to work, maintain relationships, and engage in daily activities. Children are particularly vulnerable, as housing instability can disrupt their education, social connections, and overall development.

Furthermore, housing insecurity can perpetuate cycles of poverty and health disparities within communities. When families are constantly struggling to maintain a roof over their heads, they may have limited resources to allocate towards preventive healthcare, nutritious food, and other essential needs. This can lead to widening health gaps and increased vulnerability to chronic diseases and mental health challenges.

Recognizing the profound impact of housing insecurity on health, Homeward Bound Villages is dedicated to developing affordable housing solutions that prioritize the well-being of individuals and families. We believe that access to stable, safe, and affordable housing is a fundamental human right and a critical foundation for health equity.

By working collaboratively with community partners, and policymakers, we aim to create housing opportunities that not only provide physical shelter but also promote health and wellness. This includes incorporating health-promoting features into our housing designs, such as adequate ventilation, green spaces, and a cooperative community environment.

Moreover, we advocate for policies and funding that prioritize affordable housing as a key strategy for improving public health outcomes. By investing in housing stability, we can reduce the burden on healthcare systems, mitigate health disparities, and create more resilient and thriving communities.

The health consequences of housing insecurity are far-reaching and complex, impacting individuals, families, and entire communities. As we continue our mission to develop affordable housing solutions, we remain committed to addressing this critical issue and promoting health equity for all. Together, we can build a future where everyone has access to the stable, safe, and affordable housing they need to thrive.
