When we first conceived Homeward Bound Villages (HBV), we envisioned more than just buildings; we saw a thriving community where affordable housing and cooperative living would transform lives. Now, as we progress from concept to reality, we’re already witnessing the profound impact our work is having on La Porte County.

From the moment we announced our plans for Karwick Village, we’ve been moved by the community’s positive response. Local businesses, civic organizations, and individuals have reached out to support our mission- creating community through affordable housing. This support is a testament to the urgent need for affordable housing in our area and the community’s readiness to embrace innovative solutions.

As an organization, we expect to see significant positive changes in several areas in our community as a result of Karwick Villages, our first affordable housing project:

First, by providing stable, affordable rental housing, we’ll help alleviate the financial strain on many families and individuals. This increased financial stability can lead to improved health outcomes, better educational performance for children, and more opportunities for residents to engage in and contribute to their community.

Second, our cooperative model will foster a strong sense of community and belonging. As residents work together to guide their living environment, we anticipate the development of new skills, increased civic engagement, and the formation of supportive social networks that extend beyond the boundaries of our villages.

Third, our commitment to sustainability will have lasting environmental benefits. Our eco-friendly building practices and focus on community gardens and green spaces will contribute to a healthier local environment and serve as a model for future developments in the area. We also want our buildings to be functional, beautiful, innovative, and environmentally friendly.

We foresee HBV having a ripple effect throughout La Porte County. By providing affordable housing, we’ll free up residents’ income to be spent in local businesses.

Perhaps most importantly, we believe and hope we can change the conversation around affordable housing and community development. By demonstrating the success of our cooperative model, we hope to inspire similar initiatives and encourage policy changes that support affordable housing development throughout the region. We have adopted the best practices from cooperative communities across the country to bring this unique model of affordable housing communities to our community.

As we continue to progress from concept to community, we’re inspired by the support we’ve received and the potential impact of our work. We’re not just building houses; we’re laying the foundation for a more inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant La Porte County. The journey from idea to reality is a long one, but with each step, we’re seeing our vision of a stronger community come to life.

We invite you to join us on this journey. Whether as a future resident, a community partner, or a supporter, your involvement can help shape the future of affordable housing in La Porte County. Together, we’re not just building villages; we’re building a brighter future for all.
