As we near construction at our Karwick Village project, Homeward Bound Villages wanted to take a moment to share our innovative, eco-friendly approach to community development. We hope that the Karwick Village project, nestled into a beautiful plot on Karwick Road in Michigan City, will set new standards for sustainable, affordable housing. Eco-friendly design and construction are not just for high-end construction. As an organization, we are striving to make green living accessible to all.

High-Impact Design, Low Environmental Impact

At the core of our Karwick Village is a high-impact design that prioritizes ecological friendliness. Every aspect of our community layout has been meticulously planned to minimize environmental disruption while maximizing the quality of life for our residents.

We designed our affordable rental units at Karwick Village to have a smaller footprint with big efficiency. In the world of sustainable housing, size matters – and sometimes, smaller is better. The rental units at Karwick Village boast a smaller footprint, which translates directly into reduced energy consumption and improved efficiency.

These compact yet cleverly designed spaces require less heating and cooling, resulting in lower energy bills for our future residents. But efficiency isn’t just about size. Our rental units are affordable to rent and more affordable to live in long-term.

Positive Energy: More Than Just a Feeling

We’re proud to announce that the Karwick Village residential design has received an energy rating that surpasses the Indiana energy performance standard. This achievement is a testament to our commitment to sustainability from the ground up.

Our residential units will be all electric which further limits the impact on our environment by not relying on fossil fuel. Window placement and building orientation allow for the benefits of passive solar in colder weather.

The eco-conscious design has been a hallmark of the Karwick Village project for Homeward Bound Village.

Beyond the Homes: A Green Community

Sustainability in our Eco-Village doesn’t stop at the doorstep. The Karwick Village outdoor open space is a testament to our belief that eco-friendly can be beautiful and community-enhancing. We know that low-income rental units do not prioritize green spaces and are often found to significantly lack in affordable neighborhoods. We all know that this lack of green space can have a direct impact on the mental health of neighborhood residents. Green spaces lend to healthier communities.

The Karwick Village shared green area is planned to feature:

– Native plant species that require less water and maintenance

– A Community Garden where residents can share in the labor and bounty

– Walking trails to encourage outdoor activity and connection with nature

A Model for the Future

At Homeward Bound Villages, we believe that sustainable, affordable housing is not just possible – it’s essential. Our Eco-conscious focus demonstrates that with thoughtful design, innovative technologies, and a commitment to environmental stewardship, we can create communities that are good for people and the planet.

As we move forward, we invite you to join us in bringing eco-friendly aspects to our community. Whether you’re a potential resident, a curious neighbor, or a fellow advocate for sustainable living, there’s a place for you in our vision for a greener, more affordable future.

Stay tuned for more updates on our Karwick Village project, and together, let’s build a sustainable tomorrow.
