It’s often said that it takes a village to build a home. For Homeward Bound Villages, that village includes some extraordinary individuals who go above and beyond to support our mission. Today, we are honored to shine a spotlight on one such partner who has been instrumental in our journey for the past decade.
Meet Our Dedicated Partner- Shem Khalil of Global Engineering
For over ten years, Shem Khalil of Global Engineering, a local civil engineering firm has been a cornerstone of support for HBV’s mission to create affordable housing in our community. Shem, whose expertise has been invaluable to our projects, was drawn to our cause through a personal connection and a deep understanding of our community’s needs.
The story of this partnership begins with a conversation between friends. Our co- founder, Leigh Coburn, shared the challenges facing our community due to the lack of affordable housing. The impact of this conversation was profound for Shem. As a respected engineer and a community member, our partner recognized not just a problem, but an opportunity to make a real difference.
“Hearing firsthand how the lack of affordable housing was impacting our community, I knew I had to get involved,” Shem recalls. “It wasn’t just about buildings; it was about creating a community for all.”
Since that initial conversation, Shem and Global Engineering have donated countless hours to support our mission of creating community through affordable housing in La Porte County. Shem’s contributions have ranged from providing expert engineering advice to hands-on involvement in our Karwick Village project.
The impact of this partnership extends far beyond the technical aspects of our projects. It’s a testament to the power of community engagement and the ripple effect that one person’s commitment can have.
When asked about the most rewarding aspect of this long-standing partnership, Shem emphasized this isn’t about my organization, “it’s about the community. We are building community.”
We concluded our interview by asking Shem, if there was one thing he’d want the community to know about their partnership with us. The response was simple yet powerful:
“Please support Homeward Bound Villages and their cause.”
These words encapsulate the essence of our mission and the critical role that community support plays in making affordable housing a reality.
